The DUCC: The Underground Command Center That Never Was
During the height of the Cold War, the Pentagon proposed the Deep Underground Command Center (DUCC) — a massive hardened bunker 3,500 feet beneath Washington D.C., under the Potomac River. Plans showed it linking the Pentagon, the White House, and other key buildings by secure tunnels or high-speed elevators so leaders could escape within minutes.
It would have been able to survive a direct nuclear strike and continue running the country from underground. But despite studies and sketches, the DUCC was never built as planned. The price tag, engineering challenges, and shifting strategy left it on the drawing board.
Myths vs. Reality
Because some tunnels and bunkers are classified or rarely discussed, rumors take root. Stories about a full-fledged private “metro line” under D.C. persist, but no credible public evidence confirms a functioning secret train system. Most of what does exist are service tunnels, pedestrian passages, and secure facilities — not an underground commuter rail.
Still, the kernel of truth — real bunkers, real evacuation tunnels — gives these tales staying power.
GSK commits $30 billion to US research and development, factory expansion, as Trump visits UK
Drugmaker GSK (GSK.L), opens new tab said Wednesday it would invest $30 billion in U.S. research and development and supply chain infrastructure over five years, after U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Britain for a second state visit to seal investment deals.
The company said its new facilities in the U.S., which made up half its revenue last year, would “bridge R&D and manufacturing across both the U.S. and UK, strengthening the two countries’ leadership in life sciences.”
GSK’s investment includes $1.2 billion to build a new factory in Pennsylvania that will produce new medicines for respiratory disease and cancer, with construction to commence in 2026.
It will invest in AI, digital technology, new drug substance manufacturing, and improved device assembly at GSK’s five U.S. sites.
London-based GSK is the latest drugmaker to scale up its U.S. footprint as Trump threatens to impose import tariffs on the industry and seeks to boost domestic manufacturing. The sector has historically been spared from trade disputes.
“This landmark investment will create tens of thousands of American jobs and ensure that critical medicines and technologies are developed and manufactured right here on U.S. soil—where they belong,” U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in a statement shared by GSK.
CLINICAL TRIALS, R&D TO GET BOOST
The investment will bolster R&D and clinical trial activity, and the U.S. is expected to rank first for the number of studies, sites and clinical trial participants conducted by GSK over the next five years, the company said.
The drugmaker did not say whether the $30 billion included funds already earmarked for its U.S. business.
Pharma industry sources have told Reuters that some firms that have announced large U.S investments under Trump have included projects or sites already in the works in order to provide a large headline figure.
Novo Nordisk will test whether its future weight-loss drugs can treat a wide range of obesity-linked conditions.
Stellantis to recall nearly 164,000 US vehicles over risk of detached door trim pieces
Sept 17 (Reuters) – Stellantis (STLAM.MI), opens new tab is recalling nearly 164,000 Jeep vehicles in the U.S. due to issues causing a possible detachment of the trim on the driver and passenger doors, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Wednesday.
The recall covers certain Chrysler Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer vehicles made between 2022 and 2025, the auto safety regulator said, adding that dealers will inspect and replace the door trim, as necessary, free of charge.
Earlier in September, the NHTSA said Stellantis was recalling about 92,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles in the U.S. due to a software error within the hybrid control processor that could cause a loss of drive power.
Last week, the regulator opened a probe into about 287,000 Chrysler Pacifica minivans from the 2017-2018 model years over potential issues with their electric power steering.
